Measuring Guide for Custom Curtains
Accurate measurements improve the curtain’s appearance, light-blocking ability, thermal comfort, and sound insulation. The most important point: Don’t just measure the window pane—measure the entire area to be covered.
1. Measure the width
Measure the width of the opening, then add an overhang on each side. For soundproof, thermal, or blackout curtains, we generally recommend a generous overhang to minimize the passage of noise, air, and light.
- Recommended minimum: 15 to 20 cm on each side.
- If possible: cover the entire available width of the wall or the area to be treated.
2. Measure the height
Measure from the intended installation point: curtain rod, track, ceiling, or top of the opening. For best results, the curtain should hang close to the floor or cover the sensitive area generously.
- For ceiling installation: Measure from the ceiling to the floor, then subtract a few millimeters if necessary.
- For a wall-mounted rod: Measure from the top of the rod to the desired height.
3. Plan for creases
A curtain does not need to be perfectly taut. Pleats improve the drape and make the curtain more comfortable to use. With grommets, you generally need to order a width that is greater than the actual width to be covered.
4. Choose the installation method
For heavy or wide curtains, a track system is often more convenient and durable than a traditional curtain rod. It also allows the curtain to move more smoothly.
5. Things to Check Before Ordering
- Total width to be covered.
- Desired finished height.
- Installation type: rail or rod.
- Main focus: noise, cold, heat, light.
- Presence of a radiator, a handle, a shutter box, or an obstacle.
